a. Issue One: Liza Weinstein.
A Detroit-native, I have wanted for a long time to turn my attention to the
city and to its spaces of abandonment. It was by exploring Detroit as a
teenager and by learning its sad story of neglect that I fell in love with
cities. I wrote about Lansing, New York, Chicago, and Mumbai, but not until I
wrote this essay did I turn my thoughts about Detroit into written words.
Bio Liza J. Weinstein is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in sociology at the University
of Chicago. Her research examines the consequences of political-economic
changes on the construction and reconstruction of cities. Her dissertation
will examine the politics of redevelopment in Mumbai, within the context of
India's contemporary economic liberalization. She received an MA in Sociology
from the New School for Social Research and a BA from Michigan State
University's James Madison College. In her free time - of which she currently
has precious little - she likes to explore cities. Taking pictures and writing
about them, she tries to distill their individual personalities and characters.
